Still somewhat recommended (and Robyn Ng's accompanying illustrations are certainly bright and lively, and as such a perfect compliment to Ashburn's narrative, to her poetry). Now I Had a Favorite Hat is still a sweet enough tale, but personally, I most definitely would have appreciated considerably more variety from Boni Ashburn (as the story is really and truly just a bit too repetitive, and even the poetry, the cadence of the text feels very much like just a total rehashing of I Had a Favorite Dress). For general network-type friending, please look for me on twitter or facebook- thanks!īoni Ashburn's 2015 I Had A Favourite Hat is very very similar (and in many ways actually rather too much so) to her 2011 I Had a Favourite Dress and truth be told, the parallelism between both narratives and themes actually does prove more than bit monotonous and tedious (with the only real differences being that instead of a dress being recycled, in I Had a Favourite Hat it is now a hat, and instead of the mother sewing new articles of clothing from the erstwhile favorite dress, this time the narrator herself crafts different styles of hats, or rather, adds decorative touches to her hat for diverse occasions and holidays, until in its final incarnation as a scarecrow's head covering, the hat blows away on a windy Wednesday, never to be seen again).

If I don't friend you back, it's probably because we don't read a lot of the same genre. In any event, I hope no book takes its rating personally :)Īlso, I prefer to use goodreads for its intended purpose- to give and find great book recommendations for the types of books I read. And no stars? Means I can't decide how I feel about the book and therefore I don't feel qualified to rate it. One star means I truly do not care for the book- sorry. Two stars might be books that I like in some way, but most likely have some particular aspect that I don't think was executed as well as it could have been. *Please note: I give 5 stars to books I adore and MUST own, 4 stars to books that will stay with me in some way and that I almost-adore, and 3 stars to books I like.
